You have kept teaching and mentoring in Copenhagen as if nothing changed, which says everything.

Thank you for sequencing the first ancient human genome and for showing that two grams of soil can hold the memory of vanished ecosystems, founding the field of environmental DNA. You have also returned ancestors to their descendants, proving that genomics can be done with respect.

Thank you for co-discovering GLP-1 and patiently working out its physiology over four decades, science that now helps hundreds of millions of people living with diabetes and obesity. Few careers have traveled so far from a gut peptide to a global change in human health.

Thank you for showing how the living ocean draws down carbon and for carrying that science into the planetary boundaries framework and the UN's own sustainability reporting. You have spent a career making sure the ocean has a voice in rooms where decisions are made.

Thank you for explaining Europe to Europeans, from courtrooms to referendums, and for defending the rule of law in public debate when it would have been easier to stay in the seminar room. Democracies need scholars willing to speak plainly, and you always have.

Thank you for following cosmic dust from dying stars to newborn planets, and for telling that story to the Danish public with such warmth that astronomy feels like it belongs to everyone. Your two titles, astrophysics and public understanding, were never really two jobs; they are one calling.

Thank you for asking the biggest question in ecology, why life is distributed the way it is, and answering it with 400 papers and a generation of students. Governments and the UN turn to you because you built the maps of life they need to protect it.

Thank you for bringing the mathematics of randomness to living systems, from neurons to whale dives, and for leading the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters as its president. You show young mathematicians that rigor and biological curiosity belong together.

Thank you for showing that privacy has a deep human history, tracing how people from 1500 to 1800 drew the lines between themselves and the world. In an age renegotiating those same boundaries, your Centre for Privacy Studies gives the present a usable past.

Thank you for reading 3.7 billion year old Greenland rocks and finding the earliest traces of photosynthetic life, and for now turning glacial rock flour into a way for Greenland to help feed and cool the world. Few scientists connect deep time to the future so gracefully.

Thank you for more than 300 books and articles that gave Denmark its legal memory, from medieval codes to the modern state, taught in a voice generations of law students recognize instantly. You made legal history not a footnote but a foundation.
