Different work belongs on different hardware. Tiny models on the tag decide what matters before waking an expensive radio. The phone learns what is normal for your specific dog, which is the most private thing here and so belongs on hardware you own. The cloud reasons across years. Only then does a language model turn a validated finding into a sentence.
The rule that keeps it honest
Correct: Sensors, then signal processing, then validated events, then structured record, then explanation.
Never: Raw noisy sensor data straight into a language model, then a confident medical claim.
Layer 0. On the tag: signal processing
Filtering, windowing, artifact rejection, deciding which samples are even usable.
Most of what a sensor produces is noise. Discarding it here saves battery, bandwidth and false alarms.
Layer 1. On the tag: tiny embedded models
Motion class, sleep, scratch, head shake, bark, collar removal, breathing-window detection, anomaly scoring.
The tag must decide what matters before it wakes an expensive radio. The most valuable model on the device may be the one that manages the battery.
Layer 2. On the phone: personalized learning
This dog's baseline, local classification, notification ranking, recent history, offline answers.
The personalization that makes this useful is also the most private. It belongs on hardware the family owns.
Layer 3. In the private cloud: longitudinal reasoning
Long-horizon trends, cohort comparison, weekly reports, veterinary record processing.
Some questions need more history than a phone should hold, and more compute than a phone should spend.
Layer 4. 🐶 Dog Agent
Conversation grounded in timestamped records, calling controlled tools rather than roaming free.
The model orchestrates. Validated services produce the evidence. It never invents a finding.
Layer 5. Veterinary intelligence
A structured summary for a clinician, not a firehose of consumer data.
A veterinarian has ten minutes. What they need is the change and when it started.
Layer 6. Population learning
Consented cohort models, false-alert suppression, breed and age comparison.
Only defensible with real consent and real outcome labels. This is the moat, and it is earned slowly.
What we will and will not say about your dog
Veterinarians have warned that consumer trackers can create unnecessary alarm. That makes the wording of an alert a safety decision, not a copy decision, so the rules are published rather than kept internal.

Every insight carries: a confidence level, an indication of data quality, a comparison against this dog's own baseline, the relevant context, clear guidance on what to do next, a reminder that this does not replace veterinary care.
Safety without surveillance
Your dog wears the sensor. Your family receives the understanding. Data is sorted into four classes, and the most intimate class is the one that travels least.
Class 1. Raw intimate data
Continuous audio, Raw motion, Camera footage, Exact location
Processed locally, retained briefly, uploaded only when required or explicitly approved.
Class 2. Derived events
A walk, A sleep period, A scratch event, A safe-zone departure, A valid respiratory window
Stored longer, because they are both more useful and far less intrusive than the raw stream.
Class 3. Personal insight
Routine change, Activity decline, Increased restlessness, The daily summary
Controlled by the dog's family.
Class 4. Anonymized research contribution

Explicit consent, stated purpose, revocable, strongly de-identified. Never a default.
Permissions are per recipient, not one switch: Family, Dog walker, Boarding provider, Veterinarian, Insurer, Research partner, Emergency responder, AI model improvement. Each is granted and revoked separately.
Battery is not a feature. It is the trust.
Nobody relies on a safety device that is frequently dead. These are targets, not measurements, because there is no hardware to measure yet.

A first generation is defined as much by refusals as by features. Each of these was considered and set aside, with the reason.

Questions people actually ask
- What is the 🤫 Dog Tag?
- A collar-independent smart tag in development that combines dependable GPS and cellular location with a personalized understanding of how an individual dog is doing. It learns what is normal for your dog and tells you when something changes, in plain language.
- Can I buy one?
- No. Nothing is for sale. The product is in discovery, which is the first of five stages before production. There is no checkout on this site and no reservation is being taken.
- Does it diagnose illness?
- No. It is designed as a wellness and safety device, not a diagnostic medical device. It reports changes against your dog's own baseline and suggests when to consider contacting a veterinarian. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease, and it does not replace veterinary care.
- Can it measure my dog's heart rate or temperature?
- Not reliably yet, and we will not claim otherwise. Fur, pigmentation, collar fit, motion and neck anatomy all interfere with heart-rate sensing. Surface temperature at the neck is not clinical core temperature. Both are marked as research features and neither will ship as a promise until validated across breeds and coat types.
- Does it have a camera?
- Not in the always-on tag. A camera on a moving collar costs battery, adds heat and weight, frames badly, and records people who never consented. A separate owner-activated accessory is the right shape for the situations where video genuinely helps.
- Who can see my dog's data?
- Whoever you decide, per recipient and revocably. Family, dog walker, boarding, veterinarian, insurer, research and emergency responder are separate permissions rather than one sharing switch. Raw audio, motion and precise location are processed on the device and retained briefly by default.
- Will it work for a person, a child or an older relative?
- A dog product cannot be relabelled for people. Consent, medical regulation and stalking risk are entirely different problems. Any product for people would be designed separately, from the beginning, with those risks at the centre.
