He became Stanford's thirteenth president on 1 August 2024, from inside the university he had already served for twenty-four years.
He arrived on the economics faculty in 2000, chaired the department from 2011 to 2014, and in September 2016 became the tenth dean of the Graduate School of Business, holding the Philip H. Knight Professorship. His field is industrial organisation and market design: incentive contracts, game theory, health insurance, subprime lending, and the empirical study of imperfect competition.
That work did not stay in journals. He contributed to the design of the FCC spectrum auctions and to the Vaccine Advance Market Commitment, two cases where market design had to survive contact with real money and real public consequence.
In 2011 the American Economic Association awarded him the John Bates Clark Medal, given to the American economist under forty judged to have made the most significant contribution to economic thought. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a former Guggenheim Fellow, and served on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology from 2021 to 2025.
